Beautification
Pride in a community is so important, and beautification efforts are a great first step in bringing neighbors together for a common cause.
The Preservation Trust holds monthly litter pick-ups in the spring, summer, and fall, and recently embarked on a long-term project to eradicate kudzu growing rampant between Carlisle Street and Brookwood Terrace. This green space, approximately four (4) acres in area, needed the assistance of the local Kudzu Coalition, its fearless leader, Newt Hardie, and "Kudzilla". Milliken Summer Leadership Institute students tackled the kudzu in 2008. Neighborhood and community volunteers and partnerships with Tommy Eubanks of Helena Chemical Company and Dow Chemical have enabled the project to move forward, inspiring the Preservation Trust to incorporate kudzu vines into its 2008 holiday decorations at 226 South Spring Street.
